ABSTRACT: In 1974 the UNESCO published the Nomenclature for Fields of Science and Technology. Since then, it has been used for classifying the scientific activity, mainly in Spain. In order to know its characteristics, evolution and scope, a bibliographic study and an analysis of use in national universities and others fields have been performed. From the data obtained, we designed an ontology, based on the combination Nomenclature and keywords. The result is an ontological model adapted to Semantic Web technologies that provides a higher degree of expressiveness than the Nomenclature. Also it allows solving problems such as obsolescence and the nonexistence of certain areas, facilitating the classification of scientific activities and increasing its usefulness.
KEYWORDS: UNESCO Nomenclature for Fields of Science and Technology, Ontology, Professional Profiles Classification.
